Stress management

Excerpts from a discourse by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev.

When I first came to the United States, wherever I went, I heard people talking about stress management.

We manage our families, our money, our property, our businesses — we manage whatever is valuable to us. Why would anybody manage stress? It took me a while to understand that people have made stress part of life.

Stress is not a part of life. It is not your lifestyle, it is not your work, it is not your family, it is not the situations in which you exist which cause stress to you; it is your inability to manage your system — your body, mind, emotions and your energy — your lack of understanding of how this system functions , your inability to use the system the way it should be used.

....

Restfulness is the basis of all activity. You can be most effective in your life only when everything is at complete ease within. If your ability to act becomes effortless, naturally there is no such thing as stress.

Hi Srini :)

Nice words! Thank you for sharing these insights with us.

When you change your perceptions, then managing stress becomes that much easier. Meditation and deep inner focus can partially facilitate this change.

Namaste, peace and honour to you.

Surjitji, thank you for visiting my blog and the comment. Those words are truthful indeed!

Cyrus, yes, changing perceptions can help manage stress... also, when you act effortlessly, that is when you are in a flow, there is no stress at all! Of course, that requires a high level of awareness. Thanks for your comment. :)

Cheers,.

I love this blog!!
okay here is my question:
How does my friend who is suffering from breast cancer with mets to the lung and brain and just found out she has 5 new tumors in her head not suffer from stress?
She has to go through whole brain radiation 5 days per week for three weeks.
She is doing whatever she can to survive and see her 12 year old son grow up.
How does one not feel stressed?
I realize that there is a bigger plan in this that can't be seen in this human form...but this is a hard one for me.
Namaste...I will for sure come back to this blog!!!

Michele,

I totally sympathize with you and your friend. It's all very easy to speak about 'living in the moment' and all that, but it gets that much more difficult when you actually go through difficult situations. My sincere prayers for your friend.

All I can say is that the difficulties that your friend is going through will pass. Nothing is permanent. Things change. We go through best and worst in your lives, but nothing stays, everything passes. Sometimes, our trying hard to get out of suffering makes us suffer more than the actual suffering itself. As you say, there could be a bigger plan in this, so just let things take its own course and wait for things to get better.

I suggest your friend try an alternative approach along with the radiation therapy and such treatments. Here are a couple of links you can get started -- Sudarshan Kriya and Isha Yoga.

These are the only two I am aware of. There are probably many other systems depending on the place you live in and probably you may even know something else like this.

There is always hope. May God bless you, your friend and everybody.
